Because it falls next in the series it is worth reading to keep up to date, but definitely not one of the best of the series. It needs a good editing and filling in the gaps. It is still a good story, but seems to have been too hurriedly put together. Perhaps that is the way the author is replacing the Michaels characters, by leaving out some detail. How did Alex and Toni learn about Jay's mishap and how did they initially re act? Those kind of details would have fit the main-character details in previous books. The villain's right-hand guy is a character that, to me, was never fully developed - too many details of his guitar obsession, too little details of how he came to be, how he exists, or even how he moves from place to place in several instances. A little bit of VR is okay, but it seems to take up half the book and I found myself skipping paragraphs after skimming them and finding nothing important. It is almost as though the possibilities for Net Force have been all used up. The storyline in this particular book seems a little shallow. The in-depth character profiles that are common in the Net Force series are enjoyable, but there have been a few times that I've wondered why the authors bothered with some of them. Red October was seen as something of a step up into more prestigious, sophisticated fare. A patient, highly technical thriller that’s never less than gripping, The Hunt for Red October is easily the picture that best represents Clancy’s strengths and appeal as a creator. It’s up to Jack Ryan to bridge communications on the high seas to prevent an all-out nuclear war. Alec Baldwin originated the role of Ryan, and Sean Connery plays a rogue Soviet submarine captain who abandons orders and defects to the United States.
